Born in New Mexico to José Téllez Girón and Catarina López Romero around 1660, Rafael Téllez Girón was unmarried when he passed muster as a member of the El Paso presidio in 1681. In December of that year, he was named interpreter of the Piro language. He was listed among the veterans of the presidio in 1684, having taken the place of the late Juan de Alamillo. Téllez Girón was still serving there as a sergeant in 1702. In 1682, Rafael had married Maria Ana Montoya de Esparza. Their son, José III, married Magdalena García de Noriega in 1711. María Ana was buried in El Paso in 1738. Rafael was buried in El Paso in 1748. Another of Rafael's sons was Manuel. [1]
